Browne’s Miscellany Tract On Oracles

In the Pronaos of the temple at Delphi the visitor was confronted by certain inscriptions (γράμματα):

‘Know thyself’ — ‘Nothing too much’ — ‘Go bail and woe is at hand’ — all exhortations to wisdom or prudence (Plato, Charmides, 163-4).

To these is to be added, on the sole authority of Plutarch’s Dialogue, ** the letter E, pronounced EI.


Fig. 2 represents the mystic letters said to have been placed on the portal of the oracle of Delphi. By some it is proposed to read the two letters as signifying “he or she is;” by others the letters are taken to be symbolic of the triad and the unit.
